  • Inception

In order to drive home the concept of inter-professional education, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth established an Academy for Health Professions Education and Academic Development (SBV AHEAD), to bring together, the educators from medical, dental, nursing and allied health professionals under one umbrella in 2013. Various capacity building programs were conducted for the faculty members of the constituent colleges of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, by involving the Medical Education Unit (MEU) and Dental Education Unit (DEU). Ph.D. in Health Professions Education was initiated in 2013 under the able guidance of AHEAD faculty members. The academy trained the faculty team of IGIDS and formed the Dental Education Unit, the first of its kind in South India.

The enthusiasm generated by these short-term programs led to the introduction of an innovative program ‘Post Graduate Diploma in Health Professions Education’ started by the academy in 2014. Considering the need for an organizational structure for launching various programs, a separate Centre of Health Professions Education was established in 2015. MPhil in Health Professions Education was launched in the year 2016. The Centre is the youngest Centre established under the Deanery of Research & Allied Health Sciences. The certificate courses, PGDHPE and MPhil courses follow a Credit-based curriculum.
