Profile Summary

Prof. Sumathy Sundar is a pioneer in the field of music therapy in India. She is  a clinician music therapist and educationalist in this field, researching actively  since 2002 with a specific focus on developing a culturally sensitive approach in music therapy education, clinical practice and research in Indian context. Her expertise lies in balancing the ancient wisdom and science by integrating the Indian traditional healing practices into the  modern clinical music therapy practice through rigorous research  and yet placing these practices within the global understanding of music therapy. She has been a  pioneer in music therapy education since 2011 and developed the first university based education and training programs in music therapy ranging from observership to supervised internship training programs to one year post graduate diploma in music therapy, Master’s degree in medical music therapy and a Ph.D. program in music therapy in Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth. She is  also the founder-director of the Chennai based Chennai School of Music Therapy and co-founded  the Nada Center for Music Therapy. She was the recipient of the prestigious “International Music Therapy Advocacy Award” from the World Federation of Music Therapy in the year 2014 in Austria. She currently serves the World Federation of Music Therapy as its Chair, Education and Training Commission and is also the founding member of the International Association for Music and Medicine.  She is a recognized Ph.D. guide at Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth for music therapy and Inter-disciplinary Studies. She regularly presents on music therapy both nationally and internationally and serves on the editorial board of the international journals “Music Therapy Today”, “Music and Medicine” and “Journal of Basic, Clinical and Applied Health Science.” She has published widely in the form of journal articles, book chapters, podcasts and interviews in both national and international journals of repute.

Mrs Bhuvaneswari Ramesh is a Tutor at Center for Music Therapy Education and Research(CMTER). She holds a Master’s degree in Medical Music Therapy from Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, a Post Graduate  Diploma in Music Therapy(PGDMT) from Chennai School of Music Therapy(CSMT) and a Certificate in Music Foundation and Voice Culture from Brhddhvani,  Chennai. She also holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration (Human Resource) from the University of Madras and is currently a Ph.D research scholar in Music Therapy at Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth. She is the clinical co-ordinator for Internship training and observership programs at CMTER. She has been the World Federation of Music Therapy student delegate for South East Asia during the period 2014-2017. She  has presented on music therapy at the World Congress of Music Therapy held both in Austria and Japan in the years 2014 and 2017 respectively
