Inauguration of Transplant and Critical Care ICU

The Transplant Intensive Care Unit and an additional 10 bedded Critical Care Unit at Mahatma Gandhi Medical College & Research Institute, a constituent college of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Deemed to be University, Pondicherry was inaugurated on 16th May 2019 by Prof. Subhash Chandra Parija, Vice-Chancellor of SBV in the presence of Prof. M. Ravishankar, Dean of Mahatma Gandhi Medical College & Research Institute.

The newly inaugurated Transplant ICU is equipped with state of art facilities to support multi-organ transplantation. The Transplant ICU is a level III ICU with round the clock coverage by trained Intensivist, and 1:1 Patient: Nurse ratio.

The additional ten bedded intensive care unit is equipped with advanced ventilator support, hemodynamic monitoring facility including intra-aortic balloon pump. The facility of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) within the ICU is a unique feature of this setup and first of its kind in the private health care sector in Pondicherry, informsProf V. NirmalCoumare, Medical Superintendent of MGMCRI. The ICU is geared with a bedside ultrasound machine to conduct Sonography guided patient examination, decision making, and interventions. It has HEPA filters, laminar flow to curb infections.

Deputy Medical Superintendent, Dr. Swati Pawar said the facility is established to promise high-quality Organ Transplantation and Critical Care services to the needy patients in and around Pondicherry, it will take care of at least 40% of the patients being referred for want of critical care beds.

The Registrar, Prof. A.R. Srinivasan, General Manager (Admin.) Mrs. Asha Suresh Babu, Mr. Balamukundhan, Sr. Personnel Manager, Heads of various departments, Nursing Superintendent and others were present during the function.
