Postgraduate Training

Postgraduate students, in addition to regular training programmes in academics, undertake short term  research projects, participate in community development activities, organize service camps, monitoring and evaluation of National Health Programmes and community surveys which equip them with academic, administrative and managerial skills to serve as effective professionals in any academic /research institution or public health organizations. The activities of the postgraduates are monitored and formatively assessed through their ePortfolios where they constantly record and showcase their learning in the department.

Undergraduate Training

Undergraduate students are provided with state-of-the-art facilities to learn different aspects of community medicine through lectures classes, group discussions, problem solving exercises, clinico-social case presentations and by posting them to various community based organizations in the Primary Health Care setting both in rural and urban areas including exposure to other NGOs / Voluntary Organizations . This helps them to acquire clinical acumen and communication skills to enable them to serve as effective and efficient primary health care physicians as per the MCI norms for an Indian medical graduate.

PhD Training

Research scholars are encouraged to conduct research in our department and they are guided by the eminent faculty who have vast knowledge and experience in the field of public health.

Fellowship in Pandemic Management

A pandemic is the situation where disease or any health-related condition is recognized as a global threat and that has an impact on an international level. Diseases with pandemic potential lead to a noticeable level of social disruption, and for which a certain level of preparedness is required at the country level. An effective, integrated and time bound health actions required at regional, national, and international levels help in reducing the risk and eliminate the health emergencies. Being a healthcare provider, it is crucial for us to know about the effective pandemic response. It’s also vital to know what steps we can take towards contagious disease prevention. Many countries are also developing pandemic preparedness to slow the spread of diseases. 

The Department of Community Medicine under the aegis of the Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth Deemed University has developed a full time Fellowship programme in Pandemic Management. This fellowship course will help in enhancing the competencies of health officials to deal with epidemic/pandemic situations in a more effective manner. 

It will facilitate them to acquire adequate skills/expertise to recognize, diagnose, investigate and manage this unexpected health crisis with minimal bearings. The course focuses on better understanding of the pandemics and implications for future health systems to ensure that the world is more effective in preventing the next pandemic. 

Completion of fellowship shall open employment opportunities to the Fellows in the public health sector.

Eligibility for admission 

Minimum eligibility, graduate of an accredited medical school MBBS/AYUSH/ BDS and/or having post graduate qualifications in Community Medicine/PSM/ Public health.

Fellowship in Disaster Management

“ Disaster” is defined as a catastrophe, mishap, calamity or grave occurrence in any area, due to natural or man- made causes, or by accident or negligence which results in substantial loss of life or human suffering, or damage to and destruction of property or damage to or degradation of the environment and is of such a nature or magnitude as to be beyond the coping capacity of the community of the affected area. A disaster can be an unforeseen event; it can overwhelm the capacities of those affected and disrupt many normal human activities. Many people are periodically exposed to at least one natural disaster in their life, and most disasters, or more correctly hazards that lead to disasters, cannot be prevented; however, their effects can be minimized. As communities worldwide face the increasing frequency and variety of disasters, there is an urgent need to reduce the risk from disaster. Within this context, disaster management is significant as it can mitigate the effects; such efforts aim to reduce or avoid the potential losses from hazards, assure prompt and appropriate assistance to the victims of disaster, and achieve a rapid and effective recovery. Disaster management becomes even more important for hospitals as the health sector has been particularly vulnerable to disaster. Thus, specialized training in disaster management especially of medical professionals is the need of the hour. Keeping this in mind, the Department of Community Medicine, under the aegis of the Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth Deemed University has developed a full time Fellowship programme in Disaster Management to develop a cadre of medical professionals who are specialists in the field of disaster management , creating a new career pathway in today’s highly competitive world .

The major highlight of this new programs is the adoption of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) recommended by the NAAC and UGC as a major reform in higher education. As a corollary to this system, a competency-based approach has been proposed for the new programs.

Certificate course on disaster preparedness in hospitals

This course will lead to skill development in prevention and mitigation of disasters for Public health professionals; organizing of hospital services during mass casualty and other disaster events for hospital administrators and senior medical professionals; and teaching aspects of disaster relief to undergraduates and postgraduates for teaching faculty in medical colleges.

Target Participants:

Healthcare professionals involved in disaster prevention, mitigation and management, Health facility administrators who are likely to organize disaster relief, Doctors, healthcare facility managers, senior nursing personnel and NGO staff members. 

Eligibility: MBBS, MD / MS or MBA / MHA

  • Prepare an outline of a hospital disaster preparedness plan

Certificate course on ePortfolio training and management

ePortfolios are becoming increasingly popular as a strategy to enhance traditional learning and teaching methods, record achievements, collect pieces of evidence to demonstrate the acquisition of competences, the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or assist individuals with Personal Development Planning (PDP) and Personal Career Development (PCD). However, despite the growing interest in using ePortfolios for different purposes and in a variety of contexts of application, there is a lack of training activities to help individuals and/or organizations to implement and improve (if necessary) their practices with it.  To foster ePortfolio initiatives we have developed the “Short course on ePortfolio Training and Management”. 

Target audience

The short course provides an entry point to the subject of ePortfolios for non-expert users and early adopters. The course offers the conceptual and instrumental knowledge for the creation of the ePortfolio strategy and prototype solution, regarding specific individuals and organizational aims. No pervious knowledge on ePortfolios is required to participate in the course.

The course is primarily targeted for teaching faculties from the streams of medicine, dental, nursing and allied health sciences. The course is also intended for students of medical institutions (both undergraduates and postgraduates), medical policy makers, practitioners, employees of various medical institutions and organizations.

Expected outcomes:

  1. Review, present and interpret quantitative and qualitative information in e portfolio to develop lines of argument.
  2. Communicate information, arguments, feedback and analyses accurately and reliably, orally and in writing.

Demonstrate and train others in initiatives and works in their own field using e portfolio platform, also maintain accountability in both personal and group contexts.
