Training of Students

Medical Genetics is one of the oldest but a fast-growing frontier in medical sciences. Since the completion of the human genome sequencing in 2003, the genetic basis of diseases and traits has led to many novel discoveries in medicine. They have led us to the entry into futuristic areas of medicine like “personal medicine” that will bring about improved health, longevity, and quality of life. The Genetic lab at MGMCRI

  • promotes scientific progress of genetics as a field of study;
  • promotes advance the health of the public by investigating the impact of genetics on the causes and treatment of disease
  • promotes evidence-based disease prevention
  • educated health sciences professionals and the public at large regarding hereditary and acquired genetic conditions;
  • and to appreciate the role of genetic diversity within human populations.

Undergraduate Training

Undergraduate students get trained in cytogenetic research through the short term research projects offered by the MGMCRI, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth and also through STS-ICMR Projects. Here the students study normal and abnormal chromosomes in cells, and their relationship to disease and human development. These include birth defects, fertility problems, and blood disorders. They examine the chromosomes present in lymphocytes blood cultures using slide preparations through karyotyping detect chromosome abnormalities. The UG students harvest and culture living cells, understand chromosomal morphology, chromosomal analysis, and become familiar with the different kinds of Numerical chromosomal Disorders in man by visualizing chromosomes

Postgraduate Training

The postgraduate students of Mahatma Gandhi Medical College & RI, Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences & Kasturba Gandhi College of Nursing   students regularly get trained in the fast-growing field of human genetics understanding the concept of genetic basis for transmission of characters from parents to offspring, and dealing with identification and prediction of genetic disorders, research and diagnostics. Further, this genetic lab is designed to provide thorough training in cytogenetics through formal lectures and / or seminar with practical experience. The teaching and training modalities are designed to achieve an internationally accepted standard and also to a better understanding on the modern concepts of the genetic basis of inheritance, diagnosis, prediction, treatment modalities, genetic counseling and research in the human system. The PG research project provides training in the cytogenetic area through original exploration and experiment culminating in the preparation of a dissertation that concludes with research publications. Thus the genetic sessions offered here impart to the students the advanced theoretical and practical aspects of the subjects giving a wholesome knowledge in the field of genetics.

PhD Training

The clinical laboratory experience in which PhD students spend supervised by hours of learning to perform chromosome analysis, molecular cytogenetics techniques, and specimen harvesting. 

The doctoral program in human genetics prepares students for careers leading genetics and genomics research in academia or industry. The PhD programme provides a broad background in the field of Human genetics while allowing customized emphasis on molecular genetics/genomics, statistical genetics and genetic epidemiology, or genetic counselling. In addition to core coursework and advanced classes in a chosen area of concentration, doctoral students pursue mentored research projects culminating in the production and defense of a dissertation. Our scholars will be independent scientists, innovators, and leaders of academe and private enterprise in a future where genomics is central to health sciences research, practice, and policy. 

Fellowship Training

Fellowship Students explore basic principles of cytogenetics, types of congenital disorders that cytogenetics can detect and legal issues related to cytogenetics. They also learn to perform the day-to-day tasks of a laboratory technologist specializing in cytogenetics, such as preparing slides for analysis and testing, culturing cells and analyzing cells to detect abnormalities. They also partake in Genetic Counseling. Thus Students gets hands-on training on:

  • Principles of blood culture and isolation of lymphocytes
  • Identification of chromosomes, karyotyping and diagnostic reporting of the same according to ISCN
  • Correlating Chromosomal Abnormalities with Syndromes and their Clinical Features
  • Pedigree Analysis
  • Evaluation

The genetic lab also conducts regular Seminar presentations that cover the following topics:
