The contribution of the department to healthcare is indirect but substantial.
Drug information Services
The department of Pharmacology offers Drug information services to any faculty, especially clinicians, interns, UG and PG students, and even the lay public. Any queries can be addressed to the Professor and HOD of Pharmacology, MGMCRI via Phi-Sci (Departmental Journal) Red boxes put up at strategic locations in the college and hospital. The queries are answered within 48 hours and those of emergency nature as soon as possible by personal contact, e-mail, by phone or department intercom. The lay public is informed by e-mail only.
Pharmacovigilance
Pharmacovigilance is another service rendered by the department. The Pharmacovigilance unit is run under the guidance of this department. Read more on Pharmacovilance unit.Â
Therapeutic Drug Monitoring
Department is equipped with HPLC which helps in TDM of drugs with a narrow therapeutic range. This helps us in improving patient care by individually adjusting the dose of drugs and thus improved outcome in the general or special populations.
Others Contributions
The department is involved in formulating an antibiotic policy of the hospital for the Hospital Infection Control Committee, streamlining the procedures and making SOPs for the Hospital Pharmacy for improving the services and giving inputs for NABH and NAAC. Medication management and hospital formulary are continuously updated based on clinicians’ inputs and Essential Medicines List (EML) of WHO and the National EML.
Awareness Building
The department faculty highlight the concepts of Essential Medicines, Rational use of Medicines, and ADR monitoring & Drug safety for creating awareness among undergraduates, postgraduates and faculty of other disciplines in the scientific sessions conducted in the institute for better and safer use of drugs.
