Professor

Dr. Eswaran S

MD (Psychiatry); DPM(Psychological Medicine); FIPS(Indian Psychiatric Society)

Profile Summary

I have done MBBS (1975), MD-Psychiatry (1978) from Bombay University & I have done my D.P.M. from College of Physicians & Surgeons, Bombay(1978).
Essentially I am a clinician with more than 4 decades of experience in various Psychiatric settings e.g.. Medical colleges, Corporate hospitals, Pvt clinics & Pvt hospitals, Rehabilitation centre, Prison, Palliative care settings etc.
I was initially a medical college teacher, but opted to go into Pvt practice and resumed teaching career after nearing my retirement & working abroad for more than a decade.
I have always incorporated Psycho-Social aspects of the patients in my clinical care, as I feel they have a very important contributory role, apart from mere biological factors. Focusing too much on the biological component of mental illness has reduced attention to the psychological, social, and environmental forces that are crucial to healing (Allen Frances,2019).
In my teachings, I have always emphasized the extreme importance of Rapport building & communication skills and start working at the level where the Patient is now and slowly move on further.
I have a few research publications & I have chosen to work only on clinically relevant areas. Luckily I had good Colleagues who guided me and included me in their research work.  I  genuinely feel that applicability & outcome based measures should determine the quality of the researcher and not merely the volume of publications. I try to make use of the spiritual beliefs of the patient in his/her recovery as well the involvement of the family in the management.
I am also a huge supporter of making use of the technology (esp. Computers & advances in IT) where ever it adds to the care of the patient.
