Sleep Lab

The sleep laboratory at MGMCRI was established and inaugurated on January, 30 2020 and is named after Dr.Christian Guilleminault, the founding Father of Sleep Medicine. It is located in the ‘G’Block-II Floor, Hospital building, MGMCRI. The Sleep diagnostic and Research centre works very closely with a team of specialists inclusive of Pulmonologists, ENT specialists, Psychiatrists, Neurologists, and Physiologists.

Sleep Study

Sleep Study or Polysomnography is a diagnostic test during which several physiologic variables are measured and recorded during sleep. Physiologic sensor leads are placed on the patient to record:

  • Brain electrical activity
  • Eye and jaw muscle movement
  • Leg muscle movement
  • Airflow
  • Respiratory effort (chest and abdominal excursion)
  • ECG and Oxygen saturation.

The Polysomnography studies are broadly of four types:

Type 1: In-laboratory full night monitored Polysomnography
Type 2: In-laboratory full night Unmonitored Polysomnography
Type 3: Home diagnostic systems
Type 4: Portable Monitoring with monitoring of 1 or 2 variables

Type 1 Sleep studies are considered the Gold standard for most sleep disorders and involve a composite physiological assessment. It requires a dedicated setup and expertise for performance and interpretation. The sleep lab being manned by Dept of Pulmonary Medicine at MGMCRI, SBVis the one among the functional Type 1 Sleep lab providing services at an affordable cost to the patients, in the region of Puducherry and Cuddalore as of date.

Consultations for sleep disorders such as snoring, obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, parasomnia, etc. are provided.

Diagnostic Services include:

  • All types of sleep studies (Level 1-4)
  • Multiple Sleep Latency test
  • Various options for titration (CPAP/BIPAP)

In addition to these, we also provide services such as

  • Electroencephalography (EEG)
  • Video EEG

Future directions

The Sleep Lab at MGMCRI, being one of the few in the region will strive to:

  • Encourage collaborative and inter-disciplinary research in sleep medicine
  • Provide a forum for the exchange of information pertaining to sleep research and sleep medicine, including the holding of periodic scientific meetings
  • Promote education and training activities in sleep medicine such as offering short term fellowship courses for medical professionals and annual training programs for Sleep Lab Technicians
  • Establish and maintain high standards of patient care in the field of sleep medicine.
  • Accreditation by the Indian Society for Sleep Research and World Society of Sleep Medicine

We are delighted to share that within months of inception, the Sleep lab facility at MGMCRI has been featured on the official website of the Indian Society for Sleep Research, AIIMS, New Delhi.
