SPIC MACAY, a national voluntary movement dedicated to promote cultural awareness and celebration of heritage among young students has a SBV chapter as well, which has seen many events conducted by a dedicated group of students. Classical & regional music and dance are under-appreciated art forms today, but under SBV’s SPIC MACAY chapter, we are devoted to sparking appreciation among young minds. Musical legends have performed their art forms for our students, introducing us to the intricate beauty and complexity of classical music, with its myriad ragas and melodies. Masters of regional dances have also introduced us to a form of storytelling both time honored and yet still relevant in this day and age. Education is not only limited to academic progress, education should help students become holistically developed individuals with an increased awareness of the world around them, and with the programmes conducted under the SBV chapter of SPIC MACAY, we are devoted to making students more aware of the subtle complexities, mystical beauty and the inspirational quality of our history, and the traditions and culture that binds us and gives us our national heritage. It helps the students become more self aware as well, to develop into individuals who are more self-expressive and self-confident. SPIC MACAY has people from all walks of life come together under a common banner to celebrate not only our commonalities but also our differences, and hence, find strength, respect and admiration for one another. We are firmly rooted in the value of “Nishkaam Seva” – the spirit of volunteerism- to give selflessly without expectation, a value most important in today’s world where individualism reigns and as technology renders us increasingly isolated and selfish. It helps us nurture values that help us grow not only as individuals but also a society, and as a nation. And this is what we hope to achieve with our chapter of SPIC MACAY. Not only have we had exposure to wonderful evenings of music and dance, we have also been inspired to compete in the genre, and have even won prizes in intercollegiate festivals for our increasing, but humble mastery of the cultural arts. With this, we hope to continue our story, to become individuals who appreciate all that is beautiful, lofty and wholesome, to become gentle human beings who are inspired and in turn inspire others.
