THE NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON PLAGIARISM CHECK AND USE OF BIBLIOGRAPHIC SOFTWARES

Dr. S.R. Ranganathan’s 127th Birthday Celebration cum Workshop on “Plagiarism and Use of Bibliographic Softwares “: A Comprehensive Hands-on Training was organized by Bapuji Central Library, SBV Campus, Puducherry on 9th August 2019, 9.30 AM to 4.30 PM at the Digital Library, Bapuji Central Library, SBV Campus, Puducherry.  The aim of this workshop is to provide the participants with a sound overview of reference management tools and their usefulness in organizing research. Use of reference management tools such as Zotero, Mendeley is very helpful to create research workspace & carry out research works, creation & organize bibliographies, to construct references while writing research, collaborating and discovering new research. These standard tools can reduce the task of writing bibliographies, references manually while writing research, thereby cutting the time, human efforts & errors on the part of research scholars.

The National Workshop began at 9.30 am and was attended by more than 100 participants from all over the country were attended the event. The Inaugural session was started with SBV Anthem after that Prof. C.P. Ganesh Babu, Organizing Chairman welcomed the dignitaries on the dais also the august gathering. Then the program was inaugurated with lightening of lamp by Prof. Subhash Chandra Parija, Vice-Chancellor, SBV also other dignitaries. Then Prof. Subhash Chandra Parija, Vice-Chancellor, SBV released the Workshop CD containing all the sessions PPT’s and software files of Mendeley and Zotero. Dr. V.R. Rajan, Organizing Secretary explained the Scope of the Workshop. Prof. Subhash Chandra Parija, Vice-Chancellor, SBV delivered a special address. In his speech, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized the importance of Research and the use of reference management softwares. Dr. K. Thandavamoorthy, Deputy Librarian, SBV gave the Vote of Thanks. The inaugural session ended with National Anthem. Then everyone proceeded for high tea

The first session started with Mr. J Arumugam, Librarian, GR.T Memorial Library, PSG College. Of Technology, Peelamedu, Coimbatore. He highlighted various kind of   Research Indicators and explained in detail about Predatory Journals.

In session two, Dr. G. Ezhumalai, Sr statistician & Research Consultant, SBV discussed in detail about the Plagiarism and when does plagiarism occur? Determination of plagiarism, different types, consequences, How to avoid it? Etc.

Session three started with a presentation by Dr. K. Sangeetha, Librarian, Highways Research Station, Chennai.  She gave a basic understanding of Research. And she highlighted the most important aspects of research and the types of research were introduced illustratively.

In the afternoon, technical sessions started at 2.00 PM in the Digital Library. Session began with a technical aspect of writing Citations that every researcher needs to know by using Bibliographic software’s Mendeley and Zotero

Mr. N. Suresh, Librarian, Government Law College, Trichy provided the Hands-on Training on Mendeley and Mr. T.C. Thirunavukkarasu, Librarian and Information Assistant, Anna Centenary Library, Kotturpuram, Chennai., provided the Hands-on Training on Zotero

Both of the software was demonstrated and explained as to how to install these software’s, Installation of a desktop client and web importer, Building Library and In-Text Citation and reference preparation in MS-Word/Libre Office, Bibliography generation from Mendeley and Zotero, Importing and exporting references, etc. The participants took keen interest and actively interacted and practiced themselves in provided computer.

The delegates visited the central library and were quite impressed with the activities and services provided by it. They also expressed their appreciation for the arrangements made.

The valedictory session took place on 4.00 pm and the Chief Guest for Valedictory function Prof. N. Annadhakrishnan Dean of Faculty, SBV. The sessions began with the Welcome Address by Dr. K. Thandavamoorthy, Deputy Librarian. A brief report was presented by Dr. V.R.Rajan, Organizing Secretary. The participants had also given their feedback and appreciated the workshop. Prof. N. Annadhakrishnan appreciated the coordinator for conducting such an intellectual program for the benefit of young faculty, scholars, and students and also congratulated the participants. He also advised the students to make the best use of the opportunities available in the present days and appreciated the efforts of the organizers for the successful conduct of the workshop. The participants were given certificates for attending the program. The program was concluded by vote of thanks by Mr. Sunder, Assistant Librarian, SBV.
