TITLE: Cadaveric workshop on Ultrasound Guided Biopsy

GOALS

SAIRAD 2018 aims at giving the young radiologists and budding trainees a chance to hear and learn the art of imaging-guided biopsies from eminent speakers and to sharpen their skills in performing real-time USG guided biopsies.

BACKGROUND

The department of Radiodiagnosis at SHRI SATHYA SAI MEDICAL COLLEGE AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE conducted SAIRAD 2018 in the ASTRA cadaver lab in the college block of the campus on 11 October 2018. The workshop catered to the diverse needs of the delegates in providing them multiple chances at attempting imaging-guided biopsies under the expert supervision of the guest speakers and the workshop moderators. Real-time USG guided biopsies were performed and bedside classes were given by the speakers.

DISCUSSION

SAIRAD- 2018 was held on 11-10-2018 in the ASTRA Cadaver lab. Registrations started at 8.30 am with 42 delegates registering and confirming their participation in the workshop.

The official inaugural ceremony commenced at 9.30 am with the prayer song ‘TAMIL THAI VAZHTHU‘ following which the organizing chairman and Head of the department,

Prof.Dr.I.Gurubharath was invited to give the welcoming address. He gave an insight into the need for simulation-based biopsy workshop. He stressed the fact that all other modalities of simulation are compromised by the absence of normal anatomical relations and tissue handling. But image-guided procedures will give better diagnostic yield and safer care for the patients.

His welcoming address received a thunderous applause as the purpose of the workshop was made clear to all the delegates.

This was followed by the lamp lightening by

The next program in the agenda was the keynote address given by our honourable Dean- Prof Dr P.F.Kotur. He emphasised on the need of the workshop and its relevance in today’s medical practise.

Following this all the dignitaries were honoured with bouquets by Prof.Dr.I Gurubharath.

This was followed by the talk on USG guided biopsies of the liver and kidney by Prof . Dr. Venkatasai. He is a profound proponent in the field of radiodiagnosis and is presently gracing the post of Head of the Dept at SRMC, Chennai. He has won the best teacher award by the Dr MGR medical university in the year 2012 and has also won the distinguished faculty award for many consecutive years in a row. He has also been awarded the certificate of good standing, issued by the Medical council of India. His field of interest is musculoskeletal USG and USG guided interventions.

The next talk was given by Prof .Dr Abu Backer – a celebrated young consultant radiologist and presently gracing the post as the Head of the dept. of Radiodiagnosis at MAPIMS, Melmaruvathur. He is the most sought-after invited speaker, resource and chairperson in various international and national conferences. His prime field of interests is musculoskeletal system, neuroimaging and non-vascular interventions. He has numerous international and national research publications to his credit and he won the best doctor IHPA award in the year 2018.

Both the guest lectures received appreciative and thunderous applause from the crowd and the guest speakers were felicitated and honoured with memento and shawl by Prof .Dr Gurubharath .

Vote of thanks was given by Dr Harshavardhan B. He thanked all the dignitaries, delegates, sponsors and all other members who made the workshop possible.

The workshop was organised in 4 stations with each station catering to different organs for biopsy under expert supervision.

All delegates were given scrubs, OT apron, gloves, masks, head and foot gear. They were divided into 4 groups with each group attending the session in their respective station and then rotating for the next station. All delegates got multiple chances at attempting imaging guided biopsies and all doubts were cleared by the speakers and moderators.

Following this, lunch was served and in the post lunch session all delegates were awarded their certificates after the closing remarks. The feedback from the participants were collected.

WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS

Over 40 participants attended the workshop; from which 28 were delegates from other hospitals and medical colleges and 12 were residents in Radiodiagnosis, SSSMCRI. Participants represented a variety of spheres in the field of radiology – from assistant professors and senior residents to the postgraduates.
