March 19, 2016 Pillaiyarkuppam, Puducherry – Today, 19th March 2016 Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth (SBV) and Partners Medical International (PMI) announced an agreement that will allow the two organizations to continue their partnership to achieve academic excellence, quality, innovation and leadership in Health Professions Education (HPE). Shri M.K. Rajagopalan, Chairman of Sri Balaji Educational and Charitable Public Trust; the promoters of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth and Gilbert H. Mudge, M.D., CEO and President of PMI and Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School will sign a Memorandum of Understanding in SBV Auditorium extending their relationship.

In July 2015, a PMI team consisting of Dr. H. Thomas Aretz, and Dr. Lynn Eckhert, visited SBV as part of the initial one-year agreement. The terms of a more long-term association were defined during a follow up visit by SBV team to Boston in January 2016.

Through its collaboration with PMI, SBV will benefit from working relationships with clinical institutions within Partners Health Care (Partners), one of the largest academic medical systems in the United States. Its founding members, Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), are the two largest Harvard Medical School-affiliates and are each ranked number 1 and number 6 respectively by U.S. News and World Report. BWH and MGH are among the world’s most renowned medical institutions.

PMI and SBV have identified the following areas of focus:

  • Develop an innovative SBV curriculum for UG medical education within the overall guidelines of the MCI
  • Faculty development to provide leadership and sustenance of the above
  • Embed exposure to simulated patients and the skill lab as part of the educational process
  • Develop a modern, comprehensive learning management system (LMS) at SBV with the help of PMI
  • Identification and early intervention for students at High Risk
  • Develop a competency based curriculum for post-graduate (PG) education with continuous monitoring with an e-portfolio
  • Early exposure to the community for the medical students

The super specialty block will be built compliant to NABH and green energy standards and will provide adequate space for the existing facilities of Cardiology, Cardiothoracic surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Nephrology, Urology, Plastic surgery and Paediatric surgery. New departments of Oncology, Radiotherapy and Palliative care will be started that will meet the needs of the community for effective treatment of cancer with shorter waiting time. Requirements to perform transplant surgery will also be fulfilled so that kidney and liver transplant can be performed at an affordable cost. The Foundation stone for the new super specialty block was unveiled by Dr. Mudge on March 19th in the presence of Mr. M.K.Rajagopalan, Chairman SBECT. Dr. Mudge also delivered M.V.K. Iyer External Oration on “The treatment of Heart Failure at a Cross Road,” in an event organized on behalf of Scientific and Academic Forum of Mahatma Gandhi Medical College & Research Institute.
