Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Microbiology organized a Field Visit to Narikuravar colony, Lawspet on 01.06.2022. Around 24 students and 2 faculty members have participated. Dr. Kishore, a Fieldworker for the ICMR project gave a glimpse of various harmful habits and potentially malignant disorders of the oral cavity. Dr. Suganya, Reader, and Dr. Uma Maheswari, Senior Lecturer, accompanied students in groups and facilitated door-to-door visits at Narikuravar colony, Lawspet. Around 12 families were visited, almost all of them had a habit of chewing tobacco or using dry snuff, and a few among them had potentially malignant disorders. Demonstration of Toluidine blue application and cytological smear preparation was also done. Students have educated the Narikuravar population with posters on harmful habits and proper oral hygiene techniques. We have donated toothpaste and toothbrushes to the Narikuravar population. We have also planted a few saplings at the Narikuravar colony as part of our Environmental Responsibility. This visit inculcated an interest in the mindset of students about various potentially malignant disorders and thinking at the level of community well-being.
