Prepare Protect Prevent – Legal Implications

Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, IGIDS, in association with Internal Quality
Assurance Cell (IQAC) and Scientific and Academic Forum (SAF) organized the Annual
CDE program CORE 2017 on ‘Prepare Protect Prevent – Legal Implications’ on 12 th October
2017 at IGIDS. The program was organized with the objectives to prepare a student with
sound basics of patient care with respect to moral, ethical and legal aspects as the doctors are
vulnerable to assaults by relatives or public. Further, the awareness towards negligence and
its legal implications will greatly minimize the assaults by public and will shape a student in
delivering quality patient care.
The program commenced by invoking the blessings of the God with a prayer song. Prof.
Vishwanath Rangdhol, Head of the Department, Department of Oral Medicine and
Radiology, delivered the welcome address. The dignitaries on the dais lighted the
kuthuvillakhu as it has got spiritual significance ‘Light removes darkness, Knowledge
removes ignorance’. Prof SaravanaKumar, Principal, IGIDS, felicitated the gathering. Prof
Vishwanath Rangdhol felicitated the guest speakers Dr. Solomon Raja, Legal expert,
Institutional Ethical Committee, IGIDS, and Rtd Principal, Govt. Law College, Puducherry
and Mr. Ralph Alexander Mathews, Legal Officer and Head Human Resource, Sri Balaji
Vidyapeeth, Puducherry, with floral bouquet.
Excellent Role play by the second and final year undergraduate students, directed by Mr
Kishore and Mr Sheik Nizamudeen, grabbed the attention of the audience and instilled the
fact ‘Negligence will cost us and awareness towards negligence and practicing ethically will
save us from untoward incidents’.
After introducing the speaker, Dr Solomon Raja delivered the first lecture on “Medical
Negligence and its legal implications”. He simplified the concept of negligence with
numerous current court cases and their verdicts, which was an eye opener to the audience.
Following high tea, Mr. Ralph Alexander Mathews was introduced to the audience. He
explained the various sections in the Indian penal code (IPC) and gave examples for each
section which was well received by the audience especially the budding dentists and students
just venturing into clinical practice.
After two informative and enlightening talks by the two renowned speakers, the session was
open for questions, which was patiently and precisely answered by the speakers.
The speakers were honoured with certificate of appreciation and memento by Prof
Vishwanath Rangdhol. The program ended with national anthem. Feedback was obtained for
the program and certificates were issued to all delegates and organizers.
