The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Microbiology deals with the diseases of oral and para-oral structures and provides an in-depth understanding of diseases which is essential for diagnosis and for the development of rational treatment.

The department is well equipped with the essential and research equipment for clinical hematology, histopathology and immunohistochemistry to provide appropriate investigatory support for treatment planning.

The department provides both undergraduate and postgraduate training programs with the emphasis on integration of basic science with clinical interpretation. It has adequate resources for learning and research activities of the students. The department has state of art equipment including research microscopes, semi-automatic analyzer and microtome and teaching slides, study models, charts, hard and soft tissue specimens for the student training program. The students are encouraged to take part in scientific presentations and also persuaded to do scientific publications. The department also has internally funded research projects.

Department patient services include histopathological and cytological diagnosis and hematological investigations. It also provides cancer screening and tobacco cessation counseling. With the sense of social responsibility, the department extends its services to the unprivileged villages where an increased amount of tobacco-related oral alterations is noticed.

The goal of the department is to diagnosis and study the cause and effects of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions to aid in the treatment plan of the oral diseases and to screen patients for early diagnosis of cancer and precancer. To train students to be more competent and proficient in the field of pathology and also aims at futuristic advanced research activity.

  1. To assist in the development of a productive, competent and compassionate undergraduate and post-graduate students.
  2. To attain fundamental and basic knowledge in order to apply the same in clinical practice.
  3. Providing the required experience to increase diagnostic ability and productivity.
  4. To interpret the pathologic changes microscopically and to provide the appropriate diagnosis for treatment planning.
