OVERVIEW
Oral Medicine and Radiology is a specialized branch of dentistry that encompasses both diagnosis and medical management of oral and maxillofacial diseases and maxillofacial radiology that culminates in the wholesome management of a patient. Our specialized diagnosticians are well versed in providing expertise in the diagnosis and management of oral mucosal lesions, orofacial pain, temporomandibular disorders, trauma and fractures, autoimmune/ oral manifestation of psychosomatic disorders, salivary gland pathologies, oral potentially malignant disorders, oral cancer and syndromes of head and neck region. This speciality also attends to medical referrals for non-ambulatory patients at the attached tertiary care hospital. Dental opinions and fitness for surgery is given by personally visiting the non-ambulatory in patients of MGMCRI.

Oral radiology section comprises of both conventional radiographic equipments as well as advanced ‘state of the art facility’ such as high-end model of CBCT (CS 9600 CBCT Scanner) with largest field of view. Advanced and recent imaging equipment for obtaining 3D images such as Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) offers high quality 3D images with very thin slice thickness to the tune of 0.3 mm allowing capture of complete detail of the area of interest. Precise planning for dental implants and other surgical procedures is possible with this high-end equipment. Conventional two-dimensional equipment’s like intraoral radiograph machine, Radiovisiography (RVG), extraoral radiographic machines for taking lateral and frontal cephalograms and orthopantomogram are available in the department.
THE SPECIALITY
Oral Medicine and Radiology at Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences (IGIDS), Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, is an ideal destination to pursue a career as a global oral physician and maxillofacial radiologist. The lovable learning environment provided in this department facilitates this process. As a speciality, Oral Medicine encompasses the diagnosis of common to complex conditions, investigations and medical management of oral and maxillofacial diseases. Oral Radiology plays a key role in identifying the changes in the hard and soft tissue of the oral and maxillofacial region.
The department is equipped with highly trained and experienced faculty. The faculty are dedicated to the academic progression of students to achieve excellence in dental field. We build academic knowledge and clinical confidence among students by incorporating current trends in diagnosing and evidence-based treatment plan for patients The department also deals with referral and consultations for in-patients of MGMCRI. Age estimation of national level players is certified by the faculty of the department.
The teaching program for undergraduates includes didactic lectures, demonstration of x-ray techniques and discussion by all the faculty. The department faculty and postgraduate students are regularly involved in various research activities and actively participate in organising CDE programs on current topics such as artificial intelligence, evidence-based management of temporomandibular joint disorders and CBCT.
Undergraduates are exposed to radiology tour to develop a hands-on experience with advanced radiographic equipment’s such as Computer Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Ultrasonography. The undergraduates are also sent to the neighbouring Krishna Cancer Institute, Cuddalore, to experience the state of art facility such as nuclear medicine, advanced radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
The department faculty inculcate research among both undergraduate and postgraduate students and promote publication in renowned national and international journals. The faculty are also involved in carrying out basic and advanced research through intramural grants and publish the same in high impact journals. The faculties practice OSCE, OSPE, Problem Based Learning, role play, group discussions, flipped classroom, integrated teaching and project-based learning apart from conventional teaching methods so as to eliminate monotony in teaching among students.
THE DEPARTMENT FACULTY
The faculty of the department is highly trained, experienced and dedicated to enhance the academic proficiency and clinical acumen of undergraduate and postgraduate students. The oral physicians at IGIDS provide expertise in the diagnosis and management of oral mucosal lesions, orofacial pain, temporomandibular disorders, orofacial trauma, fractures, autoimmune conditions, psychosomatic disorders, salivary gland pathologies, oral potentially malignant disorders, oral cancer and syndromes of the head and neck region. Further, they address medical referrals and provide expert dental opinions in person for non-ambulatory patients at the affiliated tertiary care hospital. They train postgraduate students in oral and maxillofacial radiodiagnosis and interpretation of head and neck pathologies in advanced imaging modalities such as Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). The faculty continuously engages in basic and advanced research and actively train students to publish research papers in high-impact National and International journals.

THE TEACHING PROGRAMME
The teaching programme for undergraduates includes didactic lectures, demonstration of x-ray techniques and group discussions. The faculties implement a variety of teaching approaches, including objective structured clinical examinations (OSCE), objective structured practical examinations (OSPE), problem-based learning, role-playing, group discussions, flipped classroom techniques, integrated teaching and project-based learning, in addition to traditional teaching methods. The undergraduates are exposed to advanced radiographic equipment by organising radiology tours in the affiliated medical institute. The students are also sent to the Krishna Cancer Institute, Cuddalore, to experience the state-of-the-art facilities such as nuclear medicine, advanced radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Postgraduate students engage actively in research activities, participate in conferences and contribute toorganising continuing dental education programmes on contemporary topics.

DEPARTMENT GOAL
Our goal is to ensure that graduating dentists are knowledgeable, observant and equipped to excel in the diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases. The students are trained to perform various chairside investigations, biopsies and intralesional injections. The students also learn about the interpretation of intraoral/extraoral radiographs, panoramic radiographs, computed tomography (CT), CBCT, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound (USG) and nuclear imaging.
Further, the students are guided to conduct research in various advanced fields such as salivary proteomics, cell cycle regulatory proteins of post-COVID-19, cell line studies, radiofrequency, plant-based medicine, artificial intelligence and forensic dentistry. In addition, the undergraduate and postgraduate students are encouraged to provide tobacco
cessation counselling for patients.
