CHPE enjoys the services of some of the senior-most medical educators in the country. In addition, it draws qualified mid-level faculty from various constituent units of SBV (MGMCRI, SSSMCRI, IGIDS, and CIDRF) who are well trained in health professions education to give an inter-professional flavour.

Dr. Shivasakthy Manivasakan

Prof. Shivasakthy Manivasakan, a Prosthodontist, qualified in the field of education with a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Professions Education (PGDHPE) and a Ph.D. in Health Professions Education. She was endowed “Shri Gurucharan Das Endowment Medal” for Best Ph.D. Scholar. She is a gold medalist in the dental program as well. Her contribution towards the identification and support of Students Needing Additional Curricular Support is awarded and recognized internationally in the field of education. She is a Member of the Faculty of Dentistry of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (MFDS RCPSG), Glasgow, member of the Association of Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) and American Dental Education Association (ADEA). She is the recipient of the “Best teacher award 2020” by the Institute of Scholars in recognition of her valuable contribution to the academic community and the students, “Eminent teacher award 2020” conferred on Teachers Day commemoration 2020 for being a role model to the entire teaching fraternity at Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth. The successful journey of her got featured in the unique campaign for Indian dentists who have broken glass ceilings to reach leadership positions in their careers, “Be the Light House. This is my journey”, to commemorate India’s incredible journey of 75years on August 15, 2022, by Sociodent in association with IIHMR startups. She has received the “Best Researcher Award 2022” in International Research awards on Science, Technology, and Management. She is a key contributor towards the conversion of all non-regulatory programs of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth to adapt to the Choice Based Credit System.

She has two granted patents, seven published patents, and thirty-one copyrights granted to her credit. She has 50 publications and has contributed to five training manuals on palliative care for Medical officers, Staff Nurses, ASHA, Community health worker, and Multipurpose workers at Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness centers for NHSRC, Ministry of Health, Govt. of India. She is the editor of the Journal of Scientific Dentistry, a member of the academic council, and a board of studies member for several programs at Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth. She is also guiding master’s, MHPE, and Ph.D. candidates. She is the Founder member of the Healthcare Intellectual Property Rights Association (HIPRA). She has conducted several workshops on educational science and technology, and Intellectual Property Rights for medical, dental, and allied health academicians at the International and National levels. Her key areas of expertise & consultancy include Health Professions Education, Choice Based Credit System, National Education Policy, Intellectual Property Rights, Prosthodontics, and Palliative Care.

Prof. K. R. Sethuraman

ENDOWED CHAIR

Emeritus Prof. K.R. Sethuraman

Professor Sethuraman is a graduate and postgraduate in Medicine from JIPMER Pondicherry. He joined as a faculty in the department of Medicine, JIPMER rising to be the head of department. He pioneered the ultrasound imaging and the establishment of computerisation in JIPMER. In 1981 he joined as faculty for the National Teacher Training Center at JIPMER and from 1996 headed the unit till he moved to AIMST University Malaysia as Dean.  At AIMST University he spearheaded the curriculum development and implementation facilitating the recognition and accreditation of the MBBS programme. During his tenure at AIMST University, he also served as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Under his guidance there were several faculty development programmes in Medical Education and Research. An important milestone was the establishment of a state of the art Clinical Skills Center.

In 2013 Professor Sethurman returned to India ad joined as the Vice Chancellor of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth. Under his guidance, several new educational programmes were implemented including the PGDHPE, MHPE and the PhD in Medical Education. The choice-based credit system was adopted for several of the innovative courses. The examination systems was computerized and data analytics of exam results done to improve the validity and robustness of the system.

In 2018 he returned to AIMST University Malaysia as Dean to implement the reaccreditation of the MBBS programme which was successfully completed this year. The COVID pandemic posed a major challenge with disrupted classes and clinical training. Prof. Sethuraman implemented the Jig Saw model of Curriculum Implementation to ensure that student learning was not disrupted. To overcome the difficulty of non-availability of hospitals for training, he implemented the multi station Mini Cex model. Two batches successfully completed their training in this mode. Prof. Sethuraman is one of the core faculty of this programme.  His special interests in health professions education are Ethics and Professionalism, Communication, and Salutogenesis.

Prof. N. Ananthakrishnan

MS (AIIMS), MNAMS (General Surgery - NBE), FRCS (Eng), FRCS (Ed),FRCS (Glasgow), FICS, FACS, FACG, FIMSA, FAMS
Dean (Faculty), Sri Balalji Vidyapeeth.

Prof. N. Ananthakrishnan is a widely acclaimed surgeon, surgical gastroenterologist, medical educationist and author par excellence. A graduate from Kilpak Medical College and Postgraduate in surgery from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, Most of his professional carrer as a teacher was spent in JIPMER, Pondicherry where he started as a Lecturer and rose up to Professor and Head of the department.  Since 1980 he has been a faculty of the National Teacher Training Center, JIPMER. He was a core member of the Consortium of Medical Colleges. The efforts of the consortium brought in the MCI regulations of 1997. He has been a member of several academic committees of the Medical Council of India.

After retiring from JIPMER, he joined Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth and has held several positions such as Professor and Head of Surgery, Dean (Research), Dean of Allied Health Science. Currently, he is the Dean of Faculty, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth.

At Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Prof.N.Ananthakrishnan spearheaded the efforts to usher in competency based postgraduate education, the first of its kind in the country. In addition, his interests in health professions education is on validation of assessment instruments, curriculum planning and research training.

ADJUNCT PROFESSOR

Dr. K. A. Narayan

Professor Narayan is a graduate and post-graduate of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) Pondicherry. After postgraduation, he joined as a faculty in Community Medicine in the same institute and continued there till 2006 by which time he was Professor and also headed the department. During this period he contributed to the development of the undergraduate curriculum in community medicine and other subjects. As a faculty of the National Teacher Training Centre (NTTC) he was a resource person or organiser for a variety of workshops ranging from pedagogical methods, management, hospital waste management and disease surveillance. He was also responsible for the computerization of JIPMER.

In 2006 on opting for early retirement he joined the AIMST University in Northern Malaysia. There he developed the community training programme for MBBS students the highlight of which was a much-acclaimed home stay program which brought about significant attitudinal change among medical students. As Deputy Dean he was responsible for curriculum redesign and implementation, training of faculty on pedagogy.

In 2013 he returned to India and joined the MGMCRI as Head of the department and was given the additional responsibility of Vice-Principal. He was a core faculty for the Center for Health Professions Education (CHPE) of the Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth University and played a major role in the design of the curriculum for PGDHPE and MHPE. When the Center was upgraded to and Institue he has taken the role of Director. His areas of expertise in Health Professions Education are Research Methods training, Ethics, Community Based Training and e-learning.

The second Innings

Homecoming

In 2013 he returned to India and joined the MGMCRI as Head of the department and was given the additional responsibility of Vice-Principal. He resource person for Center for Health Professions Education (CHPE) of the Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth University which trains Health Professionals in educational sciences and in setting standards for teaching and evaluation. He is also faculty  for the Post Graduate Diploma Health Professions Education, and for courses in research methods.  He is copyright co-author for 7 programmes of SBVU.

A new role

In 2022 he was appointed the Director of the newly formed Institute for Health Professions Education, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Pondicherry.

Other Interest.

With the advent of computerization in the mid 80s along with colleagues, he established the JIPMER computer club which trained doctors to use computers and played a key role in the computerization of the department of Community Medicine, the networking of JIPMER, the establishment of a computer laboratory and setting up of the Telemedicine Facility. He was also a member of the high power committee for developing the plans for the expansion of JIPMER. He continues with his interest in applications of information technology for education and research.

Joined as Faculty member of National Teacher Training Centre (NTTC), JIPMER, Pondicherry. Coordinated all  National Courses (1985-1991)

Joined Centre for Medical Education & Technology (CMET), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi in 1991.  Played a key role in planning and organization of Faculty development workshops, and administration of media production facility at the (1991-2008, 2010-2013).  Served as Resource Person for faculty development workshops organized by medical colleges, specialty associations in India and abroad. Served as Resource Person or Short Term Consultant to State Health Departments, Directorate General of Health Services, Medical Council of India, Dental Council, Nurses Association, WHO-SEARO and World Bank funded India Population Project.

Dr. R. PRABAVATHI, working as Assistant Professor, Institute of Inter Health Profession Education, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth University, Pillaiyarkuppam, Puducherry. She has nine year experience in teaching. She has completed her master degree M.Sc. (Environmental Bio-technology),  M.Sc. (Microbiology) and M.A. (Sociology) from Annamalai University, Chidambaram,  B.Ed from Krishnasamy College of Education for Women – Puducherry, Pondicherry University and M.Ed Degree from National College of Education – Keezhakolai, Tamilnadu Teacher Education University. She took her Ph.D (Education) from Tamilnadu Teachers Education University, Chennai. She has completed NET in Education and SET in Life Science. She has written research articles in journals and presented papers in state, national and international conferences, workshops and seminars. She has published one book and many chapters in edited book to her credit. She is a member in Institutional Human Ethical Committee, MGMCRI. She got a best Paper Presenter award in the National Seminar organized by Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Manapet, Puducherry.
