BACKGROUND

National Service Scheme in KGNC started in the year 2008 and is a student-centered programme and it is complementary to education. It is a noble experiment in academic extension. It inculcates the spirit of voluntary work among students and teachers through sustained community interaction. It brings our academic institutions closer to the society. It is a link between the campus and community, the college and village, knowledge and action. The overall aim of NSS is the Personality Development of students through community service. It gives an extensive dimension to the Higher Education system and orients the student youth to community service.

Objectives

  • To work with/ among people.
  • To engage in creative and constructive social action.
  • To enhance his/ her knowledge of himself/ herself in the community.
  • To put his /her scholarship to practical use in mitigating at least some of the problems.
  • To gain skills in programme development to enable him/ her for self-employment.
  • To bridge the gap between the educated and the uneducated people.
  • To promote the will to serve the weaker section of the community.

Functions

  • To establish rapport with the people in the project area.
  • Identify needs, problems, and resources of the community.
  • Plan programme and carry out the plans. 
  • Relate his learning experience towards finding solutions to the problems identified.
  • Record the progress periodically and effect changes as and when needed.
  •  Maintaining records for utilization of funds provided by NSS cell and other registers such as monthly review meeting minutes, stock register,
  • Monthly activity file, annual enrollment register.
  • The activities of NSS Voluntaries are
  • Education and recreation.
  •  Programmes for working during emergencies (Cyclones, floods, earthquakes, drought).
  • Environment Enrichment and Conservation.
  • Health, family welfare and nutrition programme.
  • Production oriented programme.
  • Social service programme.
  • Preserving the environment free from pollution.
  • Other activities are undertaken depending on local needs and priorities.

Resolutions

  • Increase the number of blood donors in comparison with the previous year.
  • More number of an awareness campaign.

Innovative and Best Practices

  • Conducting special camps in the adopted village every year.
  • Conducting frequent screening programmes with the effective medical team, both in schools and in villages in order to identify health problems in the early stage.
  • Sending NSS volunteers for national participation like adventure camps, Republic day parade selection etc.,
  • Participation in the enrollment of new voters along with Electoral commission Puducherry.
  • Coastal cleaning activity along with Puducherry coastal region.
  • Participation in disaster drills organized by the national disaster response force.
  • Planting saplings in and around the college campus and adopted village with the help of the Forest department.

Future plans

  • Formal Training is planned for Quick response team members to meet emergencies/disaster. 
  • Train volunteers on first aid and BLS.
  • Motivate volunteers to plant saplings on a 1:1 ratio basis.
  • Planned to work on environmental preservation basis such as developing mangrove forest in seashore villages of Puducherry.
