Department of Community Medicine under the guidance of Dr Arun (Assistant Professor, in-charge faculty of RHTC) and RHTC Medical officer conducted a health awareness programme about “Diabetes mellitus and its prevention” in VKC Seliameduanganwadi on 20th February 2021 with the help of a Medical Social Worker (Mr Parthiban) and four interns. There were around 20-25 community people as an audience, the majority being the elderly population. Charts and posters illustrating the risk factors, signs & symptoms and complications of diabetes mellitus were displayed. A healthy and balanced diet with split meals for diabetic patients were shown using colourful charts. Interns explained the modifiable risk factors for diabetes mellitus, screening facilities available and supply of medications free of cost for diabetic patients at the nearest Government primary health centres. Also, the complications as a result of diabetes and regular screening for those complications were briefed. Non-pharmacological management of diabetes such as physical activity, yoga, meditation and diet (split-meals) were emphasized. It was an interactive session where the queries of the audience were clarified by the interns.
