Orthopaedics

Courses

The department provides special skills in Arthroplasty (Joint Replacement), Arthroscopy ( keyHole surgery), Spine Surgery , Paediatric orthopaedics, Limb Reconstruction and management of complex trauma.

Undergraduate Training

  • The department provides regular theoretical and clinical teaching for undergraduate students. Theory classes are held by the faculty using audio-visual aids. The undergraduate students are taught basic clinical skills by interactive bedside teaching. Cases are discussed including history taking, examination skills and management of musculoskeletal disorders.
  • The undergraduates are examined periodically in both theoretical and practical skills with internal assessment being an important part of the final assessment.
  • The department conducts examinations in Orthopaedics as part of the final year surgical paper. Students whose performance falls short of minimum standards receive periodical feedback and special classes to improve their performance. 

Postgraduate Training

  • The PG students undergo supervised training in managing emergencies and elective surgical procedures, managing patients in the outpatient, inpatient department and ward-based duties.
  • During their training PG students rotate through different units learning different skills.
  • The students also undergo monthly tests, and evaluation of their performance is recorded for internal assessment.
  • The students undergo a teaching programme each afternoon in the form of weekly departmental meetings, symposium and seminar presentation, journal club review, clinical case presentation, cadaveric workshop, skills lab and inter-departmental meetings and reviews with radiology and pathology. Monthly written tests are conducted and students performance is updated. The daily log is maintained which includes the cases seen, reflections and skills learnt on a day to day basis.
  • The postgraduate students are encouraged to attend regional, state and national level conferences and workshops. The faculty and PG students make regular presentations at these conferences.
  • The department encourages research publications by the faculty and students in peer-reviewed journals.

The department provides rich, dynamic and inter-disciplinary environment for the research scholars to pursue their studies. Interested candidates can make use of the opportunity and enrol for a PhD under the expert guidance of eminent faculty.

The MS Orthopaedics course at MGMCRI offers residents training to identify and recognize various congenital, developmental, inflammatory, infective, traumatic, metabolic, neuromuscular, degenerative and oncologic disorders of the musculoskeletal systems. They are exposed to the different disciplines in Orthopaedics – Arthroplasty, Spine and Trauma allowing them to have a well-rounded experience.
