Research Activities
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Microbiology provides an in-depth understanding of oral and paraoral structures and the diseases arise and associated from those structures , the knowledge of which is essential for diagnosis and for the development of rational treatment. The department is well equipped with the essential routine diagnostic and also research equipment for clinical hematology, histopathology and immunohistochemistry to provide appropriate investigatory support for treatment planning Although the oral cavity is accessible for visual examination, oral cancers are generally diagnosed late. Lack of awareness in patients and the phase of negation and ignoring the symptoms are the reasons for not seeing a doctor right away, and is considered the “first loss of time”. The “second loss of time” occurs due to lack of awareness of medical and dental professionals and the lack of a timely diagnosis. It is important to reduce the “first loss of time” by increasing awareness of the importance of self-examination, and to shorten the “second loss of time” through education of medical and dental staff..The research facility in the department aids to frame and conduct research projects. The department is engaged actively in areas of Research funded by ICMR as well Intramural funds (seed money) sponsored by Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth . The department holds ICMR (Extra Mural ) a collaborative research and Intra Mural funded project. . The department also motivates undergraduate students in Research thereby the department holds five ICMR STS projects. Around 3 Intra Mural Funded research projects with seed money granted by Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth and 3 SBV STS projects by the Undergraduates . Identifying the nature of existing prevailing diseases , the march towards early detection of precancer and oral cancer ,pandemic environment , microbial status in various life style diseases , awareness of public interest , understanding the future perspective on traditional and nutritional importance in oral health and added to this department also holds research projects in the areas of social and environmental responsibilities .As the Current trending research even more is focusing towards Environmental Microbiome ,the department research has intended to drive research towards the areas of Oral Microbiome . Thereby, based on the prevailing areas the research of the department focuses and aligns with the identified research thrust areas of the department. The scientific evidence obtained from the research held in our thrust areas have been converted into publications in various reputed journals.

The department is engaged actively in areas of Research( in align with the thrust areas ) particularly the funded projects such as Extra mural funded project granted by Governmental funded agencies (ICMR) as well Intramural funds (seed money) sponsored by Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth . The department faculty holds the Ad-hoc (ExtraMural ) interdepartmental collaborative research project in Narikuravargal community and Intra Mural funded projects which mainly focuses on research associated with Immunohistochemisty methods . The undergraduate students are also motivated in Research thereby the department holds five STS projects out of which two are completed and three are ongoing with the thrust area pertaining to various awareness program in field of oral cancer ,pre cancer , studies in post covid patients . The department research also focuses various studies related to societal importance. Apart from this the students are granted with STS to SBV funding from Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth as seed money.
