On May 6, 2023, a fire hose drill was conducted with Mr. Balamurugan K, Assistant Safety Officer, as the resource person. The event was attended by 39 members from the Department of Security Services.
The primary objective of the fire hose drill was to educate attendees on the challenges of handling a fire hose and to provide practical training before any actual fire incidents. This drill emphasized the importance of understanding the various types of fire hoses and their specific applications in fire service. Fire hoses are categorized into two main types based on their operating pressure. Discharge hoses, which operate under positive pressure, include attack hoses, supply hoses, relay hoses, forestry hoses, and booster hoses. Suction hoses, designed to operate under negative pressure, are used to connect the fire department’s pumper to a necessary water source, enabling water delivery to the fire area.
Among the different types of fire hoses, the Type 3 fire hose, manufactured for Vigil Products, is notable for its flexibility, kink resistance, and ease of cleaning. It has a contact resistance to oil, fuel, and chemicals, with a working pressure of 15 bar and a burst pressure of 45 bar. Each hose reel can deliver a substantial volume of water, equivalent to several extinguishers, providing continuous replenishment and effectively extinguishing fires in their early stages.
