A huge crowd armed with their cellphone cameras formed a circle as a boy leaped into the centre of the Beach road in front of the Gandhi Thidal and swirled to a song from the Tamil film Kabali. In a flash, a group of boys broke into dance for another song.
The girls joined the dancers, jiving and performing dappankuthu to different Tamil songs. The flash mob by medical students of Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (MGMCRI) which took everyone by surprise came with a message to the public.
“We wanted to disseminate information about the palliative care at MGMCRI and also tell people about our inter-college festival, ‘Spectra 2K18’,” said Mythri Ravichandran, a student of MGMCRI and also one of the choreographers.
Tamizh Azhagu, another medical student, and choreographer, added that this five-day inter-college festival will be held from April 3 to 7. As many as 46 students from the college were part of the flash mob.
Partha Nandi, vice-principal, MGMCRI and chief coordinator of ‘Spectra 2K18’ said that students from at least 10 to 12 medical colleges from Puducherry and Chennai would be participating in the annual event. “We are expecting nearly 2,000 to 2,500 students to participate in the competitions and the festival. Literary events, fine arts, debates, sports and cultural programmes will be held during the five-day festival,” he said.
