Department of Microbiology

The department was started in the year 2008, “HOME AWAY FROM HOME” as an adjunct to T/ L technique & Diagnostic arena. The Department has catered so far to two Ph.D students & ten undergraduate student batches, each batch being 150 in number.

The T/L involves guiding AHS students also, under the banner of B.Sc MLT, B.Sc AT & OT & B.Sc Optometry.- 1 batch undergoing intern training.2nd to 5th batches having the learning process in the different allocated departments .

The department has Research , Diagnostic work , Infection control &Teaching as it’s most important areas of focus other than Copy right & Patency preparation .

The department has conducted, so far 11 CME ‘s , one state level conference in collaboration with IAMM (TAMIL NADU CHAPTER) including workshop on “PANORAMIC PARASIGHT” in 2015 , June 29th & 30th. One workshop with CME on HIV in the year 2009.

Several seminars & integrated learning program is an ongoing process in the department. CASE BASE STUDY / POL was started in the year 2012, continued till date. Flipped class was launched this year.

FDP & JC are regular features of the department.

Research activities involving Funding agency (ICMR,TAI), Students & faculties & it’s publication in national & international journals is also a component of the department . The number of publication is enclosed in the faculty details.

The other area of interest & commitment of the department, is infection control. The infection control team headed by the department makes periodical rounds to check the biomedical waste, segregation & disposal. The team also brings in the effective infection prevention among the HCW, by regular immunization program for Hepatitis B & Influenza.

The team also sensitizes staff nurses & class IV workers regarding the importance of universal / standard precautions, vaccination, biomedical waste management Regularly the department observes the national / world days – World Hepatitis day, World TB Day, World Hand Hygiene week, AIDS Day …. Provision of clinical specimens for other Medical colleges,including Government Medical colleges like MMC, Tanjore medical college, JIPMER, for teaching & practical purposes, income is generated through it . UNIQUE FEATURE OF THIS DEPARTMENT : TRUE NAT -1/100 ACROSS THE COUNTRY (ICMR/RNTCP) Development of INHOUSE ELISA FOR NCC – Dr. Jada Sunil Kumar –First Ph.D scholar of the Department.
