Department of Physiology

Estabilished in the year 2008, the Department of Physiology is one of the well-established departments in Shri Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute, Ammapettai, Thiruporur, Kancheepuram. The department aligns its objectives time to time with the guidelines laid by University and the Institution to improve the quality in academic and administrative fronts. The department adopts quality management strategies in academic activities provided by the University IQAC

The department occupies a larger floor space with five big laboratories viz., Hematology lab, Clinical lab, Mammalian lab, Amphibian lab and Research lab.

TEACHING AND TRAINING

Every year, the department imbibes MBBS students and imparts them with a deeper understanding of the Physiological concepts by our knowledgeable and experienced faculty. The curriculum delivery to the students is that of aligned method wherein the topics are integrated between the departments of Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry. The subject content is classified into must know, nice to know and desirable to know categories and taught to the students. The teaching methods are learner centered with specific learning objectives for each topic delivered to the students. Students have access to e-learning materials of the topics being covered. Learning resources are shared with the students in the forms of e-Physiology text books, power point slides, clinical examination videos, clinical case sheets writing and problem charts. Periodic seminars, hospital visits are conducted for students. Students also have early clinical exposure in the form of Problem Oriented Learning (POL) integrating with respective clinical departments. Also small group teaching is conducted for the students every week so that the students can have one to one interactions and discussions with the faculty of our department.

The department also trains them in Hematological and Clinical skills. We also demonstrate few diagnostic tests like ECG, Spirometry, and Pulse wave analysis, Stethography, Electromyography so that the students obtain prior knowledge about these common investigations before entering into the clinical year.

Assessments are done periodically by conducting series of Formative and Internal exams for the students. Students’ enrichment Programs like Physiology Quiz, Seminars, Essay competitions and medal exams are organized to enhance knowledge, learning, competence and soft skills among students.

Our department also imparts Physiology education to BSc Nursing courses and other Allied Health Sciences departments’ viz., BSc. Radiology and Imaging Technology, BSc.Medical Laboratory Technology, BSc.Operation Theatre and Anesthesia Technology and BSc. Optometry
