The curtain-raiser to the third edition of the International Health and Research Convention (IHRC), which is co-hosted by Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth (SBV) and University of Leeds, U.K., and scheduled for February 2025, was held here recently.
A press note from SBV said that the event would feature four verticals that have been receiving wide attention among the health sciences institutions the world over, namely biomedical sciences, patient safety, health professions education, and women in leadership, in tune with the tenets laid down in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The curtain raiser event saw the launch of a dedicated website and flyers. A brochure featuring the salient aspects of the convention put together by the organising committee members was also released on the occasion by Nihar Ranjan Biswas, Vice-Chancellor, SBV, in the presence of Ashok Kumar Das, Advisor for IHRC 2025, and Nirmal Coumare, Organising Chair of IHRC 2025.
The event saw the virtual participation of Piruthivi Sukumar, Pro Dean, International, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Leeds, and regional lead for India; and Moe Thaw Oo, Professor of Medical Education and Inclusive Practice, Head of MBChB, University of Leeds.
IHRC 2025 organising secretary Asha K.; session coordinators Balanehru Subramanain, Debdatta Basu, Sobana, Carounanidhy Usha; and co-organising secretary Pajanivel also participated.
The Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences (IGIDS) has launched a silver diamine fluoride programme for children with special needs.
The ‘Pal-Kavalan SDF’ initiative, rolled out as part of Youth Day events, involves applying fluoride varnish and silver diamine fluoride to teeth with cavities to prevent dental caries.
Under the initiative, the IGIDS’s Department of Public Health Dentistry’s postgraduate residents will receive training from the faculty members to perform the procedures.
The programme has received funds worth ₹1 lakh and will run for a year, benefiting an estimated 100 special children of the Satya Special School.
L. Swasticharan, Additional Deputy Director General of Health Services and Chief Medical Officer, National Oral Health Programme, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Government of India, inaugurated the programme.
Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth (SBV) vice-chancellor Nihar Ranjan Biswas, principal and Head of the Department of Paedodontics and Preventive Dentistry IGIDS Aruna Sharma, State Nodal Officer of National Oral Health Programme Kavi Priya, founder-director of Sathya Special School Chitra Shah, and adjuvant faculty of SBV IGIDS Bruce Anderson were present.
They have been set up at Rock Beach, Manakula Vinayaka temple, Providence Mall and Chunnambar Boat House
The Puducherry Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) and the Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences (IGIDS), a constituent teaching unit of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth (SBV), have launched a QR code-driven oral hygiene awareness campaign.
The banners embedding the oral hygiene education videos which are accessible through QR code have been set up at vantage sites across the city. Some of these places, which attract substantial crowds, include Rock Beach, Manakula Vinayaka temple, Providence Mall and Chunnambar Boat House for the larger benefit of the public. The public can scan the QR code placed at various vantage points and gain information on oral hygiene and its maintenance.
The initiative was led by SBV Chancellor M.K. Rajagopalan and Vice-Chancellor Subhash Chandra Parija, C. Maran, Superintendent of Police (Traffic – North East), and Asha Suresh Babu, General Manager, SBV, launched the campaign at Rock Beach.
In connection with the oral hygiene campaign, free scaling (tooth cleaning) and free consultation will be offered to all who report to the Department of Periodontology, IGIDS, on all working days for a period of three months.
Dr. Parija hoped that such community oriented services would go a long way in advocating oral hygiene across all the strata of the society.
‘SCOPE – Self Screening and Care for Oral Cancer Prevention and Eradication -A Model for Long Distance Heavy Vehicle Drivers’, under lead investigator Sivaramakrishnan Muthanandam, Professor of Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Microbiology, Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences (IGIDS), a constituent unit of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth (SBV), aims at designing and implementing a cost-effective model to prevent oral cancer among long-distance heavy vehicle drivers through self-examination (of the mouth), tele-reporting and tele-consultation.
Hon’ble Chief Minister Thiru N. Rangasamy formally launched this ICMR aided project at the Legislative Assembly complex on Sunday.
This has been highlighted in THE HINDU under the title “ICMR-aided project for prevention, early detection of oral cancer in trucker community launched”
