International Workshop on
Implementation of Problem Based Learning in Health Professions Education

International Workshop on Implementation of Problem Based Learning in Health Professions Education was organized by the Institute of Health Professions Education (IHPE) on 20.01.2023 as a part of the International Health and Research Convention 2023 at Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth. The workshop had diverse participants from Chennai, Trichy, Chengalpet, Puducherry, karaikal, Maharashtra, Karanataka, Kerala, Andra Pradesh, Gulbarga and Saudi Arabia. The workshop provided hands-on experience of a PBL.

The program started with SBV anthem, IHRC theme song, Video clipping of SBV, Messages of Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor. This was followed by the welcome address by Prof. M. Shivasakthy, Deputy Director, Institute of Health Professions Education and Prof. R. Saravanakumar, Academic coordinator, IGIDS. Dr. Annie Sheeba introduced the guest speakers. The resource persons were honoured by Prof. N. Ananthakrishnan, Dean of Faculty, SBV. This was followed by the lecture, PBL – Learning Principles and an Overview byDr. J. Sabarinathan. Lecture on Problem Construction was given by Dr. Ajay Telang. Followed by these lectures hands-on training on Problem construction and designing a problem was given by Dr. J. Sabarinathan and Dr. Maya Ramesh. Post lunch session had a lecture on PBL Facilitation was given by Dr. Maya Ramesh and PBL Facilitation workshop and finally the program ended with discussion for implementation.

PBL is a Student-Centered teaching and learning method in which students learn through facilitated problem solving. PBL promotes the ability to think critically, to solve problems, and to communicate skillfully. PBL can also improve the capacity of the students to work in groups and impart life-long learning skills.

Workshop introduced the participants to the method of conducting a PBL tutorial facilitation and explained the role of faculty members in this process. It also provided hands-on experience of a PBL tutorial. The participants received detailed insights on the steps for planning, designing and implementing PBL and experiences of PBL to plan Problem Based Learning at their own institutions. Over all the program was well taken with active participation of the delegates.
