PONDICHERRY HERITAGE FESTIVAL

As part of the Pondicherry Heritage Festival 2023, The School of Music Therapy, Under the purview of Institute of Salutogenesis and Complementary medicine, exhibited an event for the organizing members of the Pondicherry Heritage Festival. The students of the school of music therapy presented a multicultural musical performance, where various traditions of music from different countries were integrated with Indian Classical music. This varied collaboration, without making language and culture as a barrier is the highlight of the performance. The multicultural musical experience started with a Sri Lankan chant which is usually sung in auspicious occasions to extinguish negativity and then moved on to a short didgeridoo recital. Didgeridoo being one of the oldest instruments in the world having an Australian aboriginal origin, was used traditionally for healing. The next part is a Carnatic Classical song in Revati Raag, Adi taal, which was sung about the Lord Shiva, the ultimate god of Hindus, followed by two sinhalese traditional folk dance songs. The energy to the overall rendition was given by rhythms and thihais played on djembe and cajon. The overall composition was in sixteen beats (Aditaal/Teen taal).
This rendition was clearly intended to show an experience of a multicultural integration of music. A brief explanation on how music therapists work in the hospital setup, taking in consideration of the traditional and cultural aspects of various patients was provided to the participants of the event. A special mesmerizing impromptu performance was done by Prof.Srinivasan and Dr. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani, based on Carnatic Talams. The organizing members of Pondicherry Heritage Festival recited a speech on the work that they have been doing to save the structural heritage of Pondicherry and shared the positive outcomes of their immense efforts. Towards the end of the event, all the participants interacted with each other, showing the interest to work together on further prospects.
