CADAVERIC HANDS-ON WORKSHOP ON MICROWAVE ABLATION OF LIVER

Aspiring radiologists and budding trainees got a chance to hear and learn the art of imaging-guided Microwave Ablation from eminent specialists and to enhance their skills in performing real-time USG guided procedures at the SAIRAD 2019, a workshop concluded by Department of Radiology, Shri Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute the off-campus medical college of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth on 28th March 2019.

With over 31 delegates participating, the organizing chairman and head of the department, Prof. I. Gurubharath welcomed the gathering. He gave an insight into the need for simulation-based microwave ablation workshop. He stressed the fact that all other modalities of the simulation are compromised by the absence of normal anatomical relations and tissue handling. But image-guided procedures will give better diagnostic yield and safer care for the patients.

In his keynote address Prof. P.F.Kotur, Dean, SSSMCRI emphasised on the need of the workshop and its relevance in today’s medical practice.

After Prof. D. Sukumaran, Medical Ssuperintend’s address to the gathering, Dr Ravikumar, Dr.Pritam Chatterjee, Dr A Periaykaruppan lectured on “Basics of Microwave Ablation”, “USG Guided Microwave Ablation” and  “CT Guided Microwave Ablation”.

The Cadaveric hands-on workshop on ultrasound-guided Microwave Ablation of Liver was organised in 2 stations with each station under expert supervision. The workshop catered to the diverse needs of the delegates in providing them multiple chances at attempting imaging-guided microwave ablation under the expert supervision of the guest speakers as the external resource person. Real-time USG guided microwave ablation was performed and bedside classes were given by the speakers.
